As the holiday season approaches, you may find yourself on the move, traveling to be with loved ones or enjoying a well-deserved vacation. Even amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday travels, it’s important to prioritize your dental health.

If you’re struggling to figure out how to prepare for traveling while taking care of your oral health, continue reading. You’ll find valuable tips to keep your smile bright while on the go.

1. Pack the Essentials

Before you hit the road or board that flight, ensure your dental essentials are all packed. Don’t forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and travel-sized mouthwash. Having these necessities on hand ensures you can maintain your oral hygiene routine wherever your holiday travels take you.

2. Hydrate while You’re High in the Sky

Travel often involves changes in altitude, which can affect your hydration levels. Stay mindful of your water intake, especially if you’re flying. Adequate hydration increases saliva production, a natural defense against bacteria, and helps prevent dry mouth.

3. Avoid Snacking

It’s tempting to indulge in holiday snacks while on the road but be mindful of your choices. Try to pack teeth-friendly treats like fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid excessive sugar that can contribute to oral issues.

Sugar is one of the main contributors to cavities, so limiting the amount you and your family intake during the holidays is a must.

4. Pack Sugarless Gum

A large body of research has shown that chewing sugar-free gum is great for your teeth. It stimulates saliva production, helping to cleanse the mouth and neutralize acids. It can also remove plaque from your teeth when you aren’t able to brush, like at a roadside restaurant. Look for gums with xylitol. This chemical is known for its cavity-fighting properties.

5. Stock Up for Dental Emergencies

While nobody wants to think about dental emergencies during the holidays, it’s best to be prepared. Research dental providers at your destination, and keep contact information handy in case an unexpected issue arises. You should also pack a small emergency dental kit with some common items like:

  • Dental floss
  • Gauze
  • A dental mirror
  • Small bottles of salt water
  • Benzocaine gel

6. Schedule a Pre-Travel Checkup

If your holiday plans allow, consider scheduling a dental checkup before you set out. This ensures any potential issues are addressed, and you can embark safely with a clean bill of dental health.

Holiday travels are a time to create memories and be with the ones you love. With these tips, you can go anywhere on your holiday adventures with confidence. A plan always helps ease the mind and make everything more enjoyable. So, go enjoy your festive times with your family knowing your smile will shine. Safe travels and happy holidays!
